By Plane
The nearest airport is Bagdogra, near Siliguri, 96 kms away from Darjeeling and 45 kms away from Kurseong.
By Train
New Jalpaiguri (NJP) near siliguri is the nearest station on the main inter-city line.Direct Train to NJP runs from Delhi(approx 27 hours) several times a day and Kolkata Sealdah(SDAH) stations which takes approx 12 hours to reach NJP depending on the train.
After Arrival
The Most Popular way of transport are taxi usually shared by eight to ten passengers. Charges are @ Rs. 135/head , Rs 70/head towards Darjeeling and Kurseong respectively.
Note that if you arrive too late for the Jeep to make a return journey from Darjeeling, you may end up paying more e.g. Rs 200/head. The prepaid counter will tell you if no shared-taxis are available, so you'll you will have to find one via a fixer or by negotiating directly with drivers.
About Darjeeling
Draped over a steep mountain ridge, surrounded by tea plantations and backed by a splendid Himalayan panorama, the archetypal hill station of Darjeeling is rightly West Bengal's premier drawcard. When you aren't gaging at Khangchendzonga(8598m), you can explore colonial mansion and churches, Buddhist and Hindu temples, botanical garden and zoo for a Himalayan fauna. The steep narrow streets are crowded with colourful souvenir and handicrafts shops and excellent Indian and Tibetan fare are never far away. The Concept of Home-stay was proposed by some the villagers in the year 2005 to facilitate constant flow of visitors to Makaibari. Initially there were 13 families to start up this project but now the number has grown up to 25 offering home stays at 30$ per day for a couple, all meals included.
Makaibari is very rich in culture and traditions and diversity of people consisting of Tamangs, Sarkis, Gurungs, Mangar,Rai,Limbus, Chettris and Bahuns. With so much diversity in culture and traditions Makaibari exhibits harmonious mix of rich cultures and provides wonderful opportunities for tourist to work as a Volunteer In Makaibari.
